Does having a water softener really make a difference?
Yes! Having “hard” water in your home can make your life harder, lead to difficulty getting dishes clean and soap-free, and even take a toll on your home appliances. But, many people don’t even realize they’re living with hard water, or what a difference it makes, until they get to try softened water. It really is a night and day difference.
“Hard” water is water that has a high level of dissolved minerals. These minerals are often mainly calcium and magnesium and are not, on their own, a health risk to you. However, they can be inconvenient and even damaging in two bigs ways: your comfort and your plumbing.
How hard water affects comfort:
- It takes longer to get suds or a “lather” with hard water
- Hard water takes longer to rinse off
- You may not be able to clean things as well as you’d like with hard water
- Hard water often leaves streaks or “film” on dishes after they’re cleaned, because of undissolved soap
- Hard water can be tough on laundry for the same reason
But often, the effects on your plumbing are an even bigger deal. For example:
- Hard water leaves mineral build-up inside of pipes, faucets and other plumbing fixtures
- There may be issues with staining in toilets or elsewhere
- Mineral scale especially builds up in your water heater, which can require much more frequent cleaning or even have a shorter life span because of the mineral content
In other words, soft water improves your comfort, makes household chores easier, and extends the life of your most valuable appliances.
Do water softeners use chemicals?
Water softeners are safe, health-friendly devices. They do NOT add any chemicals to your water other than natural salt.
Instead, water softeners work by an electrical principle. Small beads inside the water softener system carry a negative charge, and this attracts the positively-charged minerals in the water. As a result, the beads “pull” the minerals from the water as it passes through. A small amount of salt is used to help the process and to recharge the beads so they can keep doing their job. (We work only with high-performance water softeners that keep sodium levels low and deliver wonderful-tasting water.)
The result is clean, safe water that is low on mineral content and friendly on your hands — as well as your plumbing. Our water softener systems provide refreshing soft water that is ready to use directly out of the tap.
How safe is the tap water in the Lake Havasu area?
This is a contentious issue. The government will tell you that the water is perfectly safe. After all, it is treated according to state and federal standards, and it passes the minimum requirements set by the federal government.
But there are two problems with that. First of all, contaminants can enter the water supply after it has left the water treatment facility — for example, from old or damaged plumbing (either in your home or in the water main). This can allow contaminants to get into the water even if it was “safe” to begin with.
Secondly, the City of Lake Havasu’s water tests positive for 11 contaminants, including 4 that are above health guidelines for safe consumption. These include arsenic, radiological contaminants, and several types of cancer-causing compounds. In other words, there is a widespread problem with contaminants getting into public water supplied despite treatment efforts.
Most of these contaminants are found in only trace amounts, but many can have potential health effects over time. This is why we believe it’s so vital to have a good water treatment system in the home itself. It’s an easy way to protect yourself and your family.
