Shut Off the Water Supply in a Plumbing Emergency
If you have burst pipes, an overflowing toilet, a leaky water heater or some other plumbing emergency, you can take steps to mitigate the damage before the emergency plumber arrives. If you’re handy around the house, you may already know how to do this, but here’s a primer for beginners:
Shut Off Water Supply to a Toilet, Sink, Bathtub or Shower
In older homes, you may not have access to the shutoff valve for a bathtub or shower. But if you see a small panel in the wall where the plumbing is, you can remove that, and behind that, you will find handles for the hot and cold water supply. For any sink, the shutoff valves will be directly underneath, either visible with a pedestal sink, or on the back wall of a bathroom vanity or kitchen cabinet. To turn off the water, turn each handle to the right, or clockwise.
A toilet only uses cold water, so it has just one shutoff valve. You can turn the water supply off by turning to the right.
Shut Off the Main Water Supply Line
Every adult in your home should know where the main water supply line is and how to shut it off. This is especially important if you have burst pipes. The main water supply shut line and shutoff valve may be located in a concrete box recessed into your yard. It may also be on a pipe outside your home, or could be inside your home, located on an outer wall in a utility area. It may be close to where your water heater is, or in the garage. It is generally on the wall closest to the street. Turn it clockwise, or right, to shut off the water to your entire house.
If you can’t locate the main water supply line shutoff, ask your plumber to show it to you.
Flat Rate Pricing
When you call for an emergency plumber, we’ll give you a flat rate estimate, based on what you tell us the problem is. We’ll ask you some specific questions before giving you the estimate, so we can be as accurate as possible.
We include everything in our estimate — no hidden fees for parts or labor. We know what parts cost, and we generally have a very good idea of how long a particular repair is going to take. We’ve been doing this for years, and we know our stuff. We price things this way so you know what to expect. You’re already stressed out because of your plumbing emergency. We won’t add to your stress with a surprise bill.
Avoid Plumbing Emergencies With a Plumbing Maintenance Plan
Just like you get regular maintenance on your car — think oil changes, tire rotations, etc. — you really should think about a plumbing maintenance plan for your home or business. A yearly plumbing maintenance check can help detect small problems before they become big, potentially costly ones.
A yearly maintenance check can also help you reduce your water usage, which we all know is crucial in Mohave County, as the Colorado River is our only source of water.
